Instagram has been around for a long time and whilst it all started as a platform where you can share your pictures and get real inspiration from the people you follow, to business owners, it’s now considered a marketing tool that you must have inside your marketing toolkit.
That’s because, many of the people who are liking, commenting and viewing your Instagram stories on that platform, could be your next client or customer.
As a business owner, you’re probably curious, how you can leverage Instagram so that you can put your business out there and get found by Instagram scrollers.
You could of course read the many blog posts and videos about the tips and strategies that six-figure Instagram gurus have shared and try to piece everything together.

Who Is Montelle Browne?
Montelle Browne is an Instagram personal brand coach and digital content creator who comes from the UK but also gets by as a solo traveller on one of her many travel destinations around the globe, her last stop being Bali.
Montelle has also spent the last 5 years studying digital marketing, content creation and social media strategy.
From this vast amount of knowledge, she loves sharing her gifts and talents by teaching other creative entrepreneurs how to build an impactful online tribe and monetise their social media, whilst travelling the world!
How did I come to know about Montelle?
I was a member of a business networking group and one of her webinars was shared. I didn’t get to attend the webinar, but she connected with me and we started talking about what she does and how she wanted to create an impact on creative entrepreneurs.
Montelle was generous to host a free training inside my Facebook group and continues to make regular contributions to the group to help our members in there.

This course is actually hosted inside the Kartra Membership portal and upon purchasing, you immediately get an email with your username and password, where you can log in and start going through the modules.
This course is self-paced, allowing you to go through it in your own time. When people buy courses, they don’t make the commitment to complete the course.
But I urge you to spend at least 1-2 hours per day to take in everything that Montelle has to say and most importantly to implement.
Because as you know, implementation is the only way you’ll succeed.
This course has seven modules.

Module 1 - Stepping into the role

Synopsis

Montelle says something so important here, that I think it’s super important for new business owners to understand and that is, anyone can give you all the strategies you need in business to help you succeed, but you are the only person responsible for actually succeeding.
It’s your mindset that will help you actually take action and become the successful business owner that you want to be and this module will help you with that.
Module 2 - Instagram Profile Basics

Synopsis

The key to being successful in any business, is to make a good first impression.
This module will help you do just that.
Module 3 - Defining Your Niche

Synopsis
This module is really ideal for beginners who do not yet know the niche they would like to develop their brand in. .
Montelle covers some important elements to building a brand and that is conducting market research, how to define your niche and how to ensure that you’re building a brand based on your goals and not for the sake of appearing popular because you have a ton of followers.
The important takeaway here is that you learn how to build a quality brand that answers to your target audience’s needs instead of building a haphazard brand because you’re trying to see how fast you can get to 10k followers.
Module 4 - Content Creation Strategy

Content creation is so important and if you struggle with what to create and how to create it, this module is excellent to help you.
Montelle goes over some very important pieces of content you should be focusing on, so you’re not doing too much or focusing on the wrong things.
She also touches on the important types of content that is best for Instagram and really goes in deep on how to structure your content, how to write your captions and how to do live video.
Module 5 - Boosting Your Engagement
- Lesson 1 Where to find your audience
- Lesson 2 Boost authority with CTAs

So after going through this module, I have to say that if you’re struggling with growing your Instagram, you need this!
This module basically teaches you strategies that work and this is important because if you’re new to Instagram, you won’t really know where to start and being able to find your target audience and connect with them, is one of the reasons why a business can be successful.
In this module, you will get some inside knowledge on where to find your audience, what to actually do to find your audience, what to say to them to engage with your audience, how to get people to follow you back or engage with you, plus how to do the all important hashtag research.
If you feel that you have to be on Instagram 24 hours a day, Montelle breaks down her 15-min engagement strategy which means that for a busy business owner like yourself, you can spend 15 minutes on Instagram to build your engagement and see massive results in a short amount of time.
Module 6 - Content Optimisation
- Lesson 1 Analysing your analytics
- Bonus Creating an aesthetic feed
Synopsis
In this module, you will learn how to use your analytics to analyse your content performance. I cannot stress how important it is, that when you’re in business, that you make data-driven decisions.
I’ve spoken to so many business owners, who don’t use their analytics to help them create a marketing strategy that works for them.
When you know your analytics, you get to see who your audience is, where they are, their age group and by knowing all of this information, it will help you produce more of the right content that will engage your audience and help you build closer connections with them.
This module is short, with only one lesson and one bonus video. But it is an important module that you should not skip over.
At the time of writing this review, the Bonus: Creating Your Aesthetic Feed was not available.
Module 7 Next Steps
- Lesson 1 Building your email list

Synopsis
This module has stepped away from Instagram and teaches you how to create an email list using MailChimp, which is another important element in your overall marketing strategy.
At the time of writing, lessons 2 and 3 were not included in this course.
What I Like About The BYI Instagram Course
Montelle does a good job of not just teaching you theory, but actually showing you how to implement all the strategies she shares, so you know without a doubt that if you were to implement, you’d get similar results too.
The best part of this course is without a doubt the Content Creation Strategy and the Boosting Your Engagement module and as a course student, it’s one of the places you should really take the time to understand, because it’s what’s going to help you not only engage with your audience but also stand out from your competitors.
As you may know, building a relationship is now more important than ever, because it’s no longer enough to just post content and hope people will like you and buy from you.
You now have to form genuine relationships and community to make you that different, memorable brand with your audience.
This really has been the overall essence of this course and it’s super important that you understand just how to build that relationship.
Another thing that I like is the fact that Montelle starts this course with mindset training. A poor and negative mindset, holds people back from achieving so many things.
As an Instagram user, Montelle helps to clear any doubts and limiting beliefs that you may have. She could have just given you a course with strategies, but unless you know what’s normal and what’s not normal in terms of Instagram marketing, you may have tried her strategies, but not seen the results you want because you had limiting beliefs as to whether your efforts were working at all.
Any course creator that acknowledges that the biggest pitfall for small business owners is mindset and does something to tackle it head on, is a huge winner in my books.
This BYI Instagram course will help you really dispel any myths you had about Instagram and you will go into Instagram marketing feeling more confident that what you thought was true, wasn’t actually true to begin with.
What I Don't Like About The BYI Instagram Course
As I went through the course, even though I’m a visual person, I also like my workbooks and templates.
I’m a course creator myself and I also work 1:1 with clients, so I do have an idea as to what people want and what would really help them.
I do think that the course could have more workbooks and templates.
For example, with the content creation strategy, as a digital marketer, I know that this is an extremely important and useful part of the course for any beginner.
It would be helpful if BYI Instagram course could break down the actual content creation process and how to create content, for example, what to write, how to structure or layout the post or even trigger words that one can use to catch someone’s attention or hook someone into connecting with you.
Templates and scripts are a great way of doing this as it helps people map out their own content structure, because I also appreciate that not everyone is good with creating content.
A lot of people suffer from writer’s bloc, so I feel that templates and scripts would be a really valuable addition to this course to help course students.
Another thing that I didn’t like was the bonuses that were missing. But what makes up for that, is that you get lifetime access to this course plus a generous 6-month membership, so that once the bonuses are available you will have immediate access to it.
What I Took Away From The Course
As I mentioned before, my favourite part of this course is module 4 and module 5. Probably because I’m a strategy person.
I love picking someone’s brain and really finding out the techniques they use to grow their business.
Even though I’m a digital marketing strategist myself, I know that not all my strategies will work and it’s always a good thing to get a different perspective.
From this BYI Instagram course the biggest lesson I learnt was that being able to stand out by creating relationships, is what’s going to help you win.
And that’s the direction online businesses are going in now. So it was great to see another marketer focus on this and echo a lot of what I preach to my own audience.

The strategies taught in this course is mind-blowing. Something I would not have known how to do, had I not gone through the course myself.
I still need to implement Montelle’s strategies to really see if it works but Montelle has been on Instagram for quite a few years, has just over 6k followers and her engagement is through the roof.
So I know without a doubt that if these are the strategies she used in her business, to get that type of engagement, that without a doubt if you follow her techniques you will also get that type of result.
When I review courses, I typically look for one thing to make me make a recommendation to people.
And that is, a course must teach action instead of theory and must provide ongoing support to it’s buyers.
Montelle’s course does both of these things. The strategies you will learn will really help you connect with your audience, making them know more about you, aligned with your content and if you pitch your offers in the right way, could potentially generate sales.
And if things are not quite where they need to be, you’ll always have Montelle for help since she’ll be there with you for 6 months.
